Joanneum Research recently published the report “The Upfront Carbon Debt of Bioenergy”.
The study shows that different sources of woody biomass used for bioenergy production can have very different climate change mitigation potentials depending on rates of regrowth and the time horizon that is considered. The extent to which the use of bioenergy reduces GHG emissions compared to use of fossil fuels can be quantified with a Carbon Neutrality (CN) factor.
Some sources can be carbon neutral from the beginning of their utilization (i.e.,removals of CO2 equal CO2 emissions). Some forest biomass sources result in immediate GHG benefits even though they are not completely carbon neutral. Other sources of woody biomass result in GHG benefits over longer time periods.
